Net Zero Emissions

Reports that greenhouse gas emissions yearly are more than 50 gigatonnes are alarming. There is a resounding call for more urgent actions and commitment among leaders to cut gas emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050.

According to the Paris Climate Agreement, the next decade is crucial to avoiding the worst possible climate scenario.  Australian Energy Upgrades has been contributing to sustainability for many years by delivering services to commercial, industrial, and household consumers who want to shift to a renewable energy source.

Australia's Emission Target

Australia is a Party to the 2007 Kyoto protocol. Its target by 2012 is to limit gas emissions to 592 million tonnes per year or not over 108% of the 1990 emissions.  This goal was updated under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNDCCC) Cancun Agreement which aims to reduce the emissions to 5% below 2000 levels annually or from 540 million tonnes in the year 2000 to 513 million tonnes in 2020.

From 1990 to 2015, Australia’s actual gas emissions did not meet the target level except in 1995.

Year Target
1990
607 million tonnes
1995
490 million tonnes
2000
540 million tonnes
2005
617 million tonnes
2010
580 million tonnes
2015
528 million tonnes

The Australian government was also signatory to the Paris Agreement in 2016, which entails further commitment to limit greenhouse gas emissions and the global temperature increase. The initial promise of Australia is by 2030, the emissions will be between 26-28% of the generated emissions in 2005. This is equal to 453 million tonnes in 2030. Australia’s 10-year carbon budget from 2021 to 2030 is 4,777 million tonnes.

As part of the government’s commitment to reach a net zero emissions target by 2050, it has launched the Long-Term Emissions Reduction Plan. It aims to achieve the goal of a net zero economy with a technology-based method without endangering regions, industries, and jobs. The approach involves employing a Technology Investment Roadmap with Low Emissions Technology Statements.

The government will invest 20 billion Australian dollars in low emissions technologies within ten years to make it possible. It also plans to attract 80 billion AUD investment from private and public sectors to invest in sustainable, green technologies. There will be a 5-yearly assessment review of the Plan and possible upgrades of technology to achieve the targets. Moreover, the following principles will be implemented:

  • The transition is led by technology without introducing additional taxes
  • Expansion of consumer choice
  • Reduced cost of green energy technologies
  • Affordable energy prices and a reliable supply of energy
  • Transparent and accountable transition

What are net zero emissions and their advantages?

Net zero emission is a term frequently used in climate policy discussions. ‘Net zero emissions’ refers to achieving an overall balance between greenhouse gas emissions produced and greenhouse gas emissions taken out of the atmosphere. However, this does not mean that we can’t produce some emissions, as long as they are offset by processes that reduce greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere. The goal is to try to achieve a balance between what we take out of nature and put back into it.

Net zero emissions refer to the amount of greenhouse gas removed from the atmosphere that is equal to or greater than the amount released. In other words, net zero emissions are achieved when a company or organisation has no direct impact on climate change by reducing its carbon footprint by 100%.

This goal is widely shared by countries and organisations worldwide as they strive toward a low-carbon economy. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) supports this goal. It describes it as “a key milestone in achieving sustainable development” because there will be no more negative consequences associated with global warming.

Advantages of Net Zero Emissions

  • Reduce the impacts of climate change.

  • Create a more sustainable future for your children and grandchildren.

  • Increase the quality of life for future generations by reducing energy dependency, increasing energy efficiency, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Reduce the cost of energy through increased renewable energy sources.

The goal of net zero emissions is to balance a measured amount of greenhouse gas emissions with an equivalent artificially removed from the atmosphere.

Net zero emissions is a climate change mitigation strategy. It’s an approach to achieving climate change mitigation goals that involve balancing a measured amount of greenhouse gas emissions with an equivalent artificially removed from the atmosphere.

The net zero emissions goal is focused on reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, but it doesn’t specify how much or how quickly those gases need to be reduced.

What does this mean for businesses?

For commercial businesses, net zero means finding the balance between the total emissions removed from the environment and the total GHG (total greenhouse gas) emissions that the activities of your business generate. There are three kinds of emissions that can be attributed to your business:

  1.  The direct emissions of your company or by other interests that your company control
  2. The indirect emissions that are generated by heat, steam, and electricity that your business activities use
  3. The indirect emissions from the activities of your company

While the journey to reaching net zero can be long and complex, it offers the following benefits to your business:

Sustainability

Your business contributes to the local and national governments’ sustainability goals and community health improvement.

Enhanced reputation

Your company will be considered an environmentally responsible entity.

More Profit

By installing solar or LED lighting technology, you gain operational savings, mitigation against future carbon and energy pricing, core process improvement, and new revenue streams.

Attract investors

With the growing interest in green investment, there will be more funding opportunities for the kind of business you have when you innovate and upgrade your energy technology. Australian Energy Updates got you covered when you want to install solar panels and commercial battery storage or replace your commercial lighting with the LED technology system.

Why your business needs solar?

Installation of commercial solar is a sustainable energy strategy. Investing in solar power offers quick advantages and long-term savings.
