Commercial
Battery Storage

Australia’s transition from using fossil fuels to produce energy to eco-friendly renewable energy such as solar, hydro, and wind resulted in the demand for large-scale battery storage. The installation of energy storage as a backup system in case of non-availability of electricity for some reasons is crucial to undisrupted business transactions.

Batteries store the free electricity harnessed from the solar system, allowing commercial businesses to discharge the needed power to keep the business operational.

In 2021, the country’s battery storage deployment exceeded 1GWh. With the increasing demand from commercial, industrial, and residential clients, the number is poised to grow fourfold or higher this year. For 100% renewables, Australia will need up to 8,440.4 GWh storage capacity to harness the energy from wind and solar farms.

As a leading supplier and installer of solar and battery storage systems, Australian Energy Upgrades have been a reliable partner of international property groups, multinational companies, and small to medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) to achieve sustainability and reduce electricity expenses.

What is commercial battery storage?

Battery storage uses chemicals to absorb and release energy. It typically uses Lithium-Ion for storing electricity. This technology is vital to renewable energy generation. It keeps the power during low-demand hours and releases it during peak hours.

It typically uses Lithium-ion (Li-ion), Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), and Lead-Acid. The most commonly used storage for the grid-connect solar system is the Li-ion because it offers high energy density, good charge retention, little to no memory effect, is safe for most applications, and has the best performance-to-weight ratio. The commercial battery storage unit’s lifespan depends on the discharge frequency and charge cycle. The manufacturers provide a standard warranty period and information on the minimum number of charging cycles.

Generally, battery units are stackable and modular. The size varies depending on its manufacturer. You will need several units and a plant room for a large-scale commercial battery storage solution. Small and medium-sized commercial companies may only need a single battery unit mounted on the wall or the ground. For larger batteries shipping containers may be used.

While commercial battery storage is a relatively new technology, the shift to harnessing solar energy makes it a viable solution for businesses. Our company Australian Energy Upgrades can help you save money long-term, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and become independent from electric grid. Whether you wish to have stand-alone commercial storage or integrate storage units with your solar system, our professional and experienced specialists can do it for you.

Solar battery storage is used for the following purposes:

  • Transmission and distribution levels of the national electricity grid
  • Behind the meter in industrial, commercial, or residential operations
  • Off-grid and on the fringes of the grid to serve poor connection locations

The cost of commercial battery storage

The cost of a unit depends on the brand and if it comes with an inverter unit. A 10kWh battery in Australia can cost between $10,000 to $20,000 plus an estimate of additional $4,000 installation costs. For larger commercial battery systems such as 40kW-100kW, these will cost over $40,000.

More and more companies all over Australia are transitioning to solar power and other renewable energy sources. In this case, investing in solar panels in your commercial spaces and purchasing battery storage units is a wise decision that can positively impact your long-term goals.

Your savings after the payback period or initial costs of installing solar and battery storage will make your business more sustainable and profitable. With Australian Energy Upgrades, your installer guarantees a favourable cash-flow position right after the system installation.

Benefits of Commercial Battery Storage

Australia’s small to medium businesses and commercial enterprises are leaping at cost-effective, renewable solar power. We offer the ideal solution to match your energy needs with financial products that do not require capital outlay. Australian Energy Updates can help you get a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), Environmental Upgrade Agreement, chattel mortgage, or rental lease to enjoy unlimited renewable energy. We also provide solar battery storage installation and can maintain the system.

Many companies now enjoy energy independence  day and night, preventing inconveniences of the unreliable supply of electricity grids in Australia. It also provides the following benefits:

Reduces peak demand charges

The surplus electricity generated by the solar system is stored in the batteries, preventing it from going to waste. This stored energy can be harnessed and fed to the grid during the peak times of the day, lessening the high cost of electricity consumption. It enables the business to use the stored energy when the mains electricity supply rate is most expensive.

Helps in shifting electricity consumption profiles

Tapping the stored energy in the battery during peak business hours results in substantial savings. It accounts for a significant reduction in the yearly electricity expenditure of the company, which changes the demand charges. A large company using 2,000 kilowatts per hour/day can save a lot if it decides to have a 100kW PV system with 210 kWh battery storage system installed. The projected savings will change its usage profile based on the electricity tariff structure.
