118 fittings, 74% less lighting energy

Planetshakers Geelong runs its campus out of a converted commercial building on Marshalltown Road, with an auditorium, foyer, offices and a connect lounge all in regular use. Every fluorescent tube, downlight and high bay on site was replaced with LED in one project.

The brief

A converted warehouse, running fluorescent tubes and 400W high bays.

The Geelong campus building was fitted out with a mix of 36W fluorescent T8 tubes and PL downlights through the offices and foyer, and 23 400W metal halide high bays over the auditorium and connect lounge.

The auditorium runs for services and events on evenings and weekends, so the high bays were drawing hard during exactly the hours the building is busiest. Fluorescent tubes through the rest of the building were ageing and losing output.

Across the site that added up to 44,778 kWh of lighting a year. The brief was to hold light levels across the auditorium, foyer and offices while cutting the energy behind them.

What we upgraded

Every fluorescent tube, downlight and high bay.

Fluorescent tubes came out for LED glow panels at half the fitting count, downlights dropped to a third of their wattage, and the auditorium high bays went in at less than a third of the input power.

On-site logistics

Two scissor lifts were made available on site for the duration of the install, keeping the high-ceiling auditorium work moving without extra equipment hire.

All work carried a 5-year product warranty on the high bays and a 5-year AEU workmanship warranty.
The outcome

A $7,032 annual saving.

Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates were created against the upgrade.

Electricity
$6,516

Modelled annual lighting electricity saving — from $8,956 down to $2,440 a year.

Maintenance
$517

Average annual saving on relamping, now that fluorescent tubes are out of the building.

How it was delivered

Turn-key, from audit to certificates.

01

Lighting audit

Every fitting counted across the campus and its wattage and run hours recorded, to establish the 44,778 kWh baseline and a return-on-investment figure.

02

Lighting design

Fitting selection set so light levels hold across the auditorium, foyer, offices and connect lounge.

03

Staged install

Project management, labour, equipment hire and waste management handled by AEU, using scissor lifts supplied on site to reach the auditorium ceiling.

04

Recycling & VEECs

Old fittings decommissioned and recycled, with recycling certificates and all evidence prepared for VEEC creation.

05

Certification

Work tested and a Certificate of Electrical Safety issued by the licensed electrical worker on completion.
